ADR 105; what it means.
ADR 105/00 is the Australian Design Rule for Blind Spot Information Systems (BSIS) in heavy vehicles. It mandates that new model vehicles (effective November 2025) and all vehicles (effective February 2027) with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over eight tonnes and an overall width exceeding 2.5 meters must be equipped with a BSIS.
This system helps reduce the risk of accidents involving vulnerable road users by detecting objects in blind spots.
Key aspects of ADR 105/00:

-
Purpose:
The function of this vehicle standard is to specify requirements for Blind Spot Information Systems (BSIS) fitted to medium and heavy goods vehicles, to inform the driver of a possible collision with a bicycle or pedestrian on the near side and therefore avoid or mitigate the severity of a collision between a turning vehicle and a bicyclist or pedestrian.

-
Applicability:
New model heavy vehicles (GVM over eight tonnes, width over 2.5 meters) from 1st November 2025 and all such vehicles from 1st February 2027.

-
Implementation:
The system typically uses sensors and alerts the driver to the presence of objects in the vehicle's blind spots.

-
Context:
ADR 105/00 is part of the "Safer Freight Vehicle" package of ADRs, which also includes other safety features like lane departure warnings and side underrun protection.
